Wow, when I was reading my childhood story, Paddle-to-the-sea, of the Indian boy who grew up and read in the newspapers that his little Paddle-to-the-Sea canoe made it to the Sea, made it to the totality, I really choked up. If you have a toddler, get this book and read it over and over again. You can’t get the original like I have, but it has been reprinted many time.
Looking at the video as I write this, I’m reading the story to you. I am Paddle-to-the-Sea; YOU are Paddle-to-the-sea….The sea of totally is already always within you as You. And yet we have to paddle.
The nation is angry now. On Morning Joe, the congressman said “the people are angry”. Why are they angry? Everything we are angry at is a mirage, a phantom, a symbol, a manufacture enemy. We’re angry at the Nazis, and the Nazis are angry at us. Nazis is a symbol, a metaphor, a story book. We are all living in a children’s story book reading our story to ourselves over and over again. This is why we are angry. We can’t get our of our stories, we can’t put our childhood story book down. We are not growing up. We are trapped in a story world, a story of reality instead of a real reality.
We have lost our canoe, the Metaphor, the mediator between our immediate river and the Sea of Totality which is not in the future but always already Now. We are angry because our canoe can’t get to the Sea of Totality fast enough. Our canoe is trapped on the shore of driftwood, beached high and dry. We are angry because we don’t feel any movement to the sea of totality, which is our home. We are angry and blame everything we can see for our doldrums, for our feeling of exile and the loss of hope. Who will lead us? Who will put out canoe back in the river of our journey?
No one can lead us because we are already always in the Sea of Totally. And yet we still have to paddle.
Notice the hyphens in the book title Paddle-to-the-Sea? I just noticed it and I see why there are hyphens, because the hyphens turn a commandment of paddle to the sea into a noun, something that is already accomplished. The title is a metaphor that points to the totality and the process of getting to the totality simultaneously. The verb and the noun are One. Time (the paddling on the river to a goal) is also the timeless (you are already in the sea, your goal).
Each of us is Paddle-to-the-sea, each of us is the arrived and the arriving, the process and the goal both at the same time! THIS is the path of totality, Eclipse of the duality, the eclipse or atonement of the sun and moon, day and night chasing each other in time. Time stands still in the eclipse, in the Paddle-to-the-Sea as Atonement.
The reason we can’t see metaphor, can’t understand metaphors is because the finger pointing to the moon (a metaphor) is only seen as a finger that need cleaning. The finger as fact is all we see. We don’t see to what the finger points because we have turned away from the Moon (metaphor). We have turned away from the Totality, and focused the whole mind on the concrete facts, empirical facts verified by objective analysis and reporting. Science, you know.
It’s ironic that all scientific leaps to new theories of the universe that expand out knowledge of the totality all come to the scientist’s mind through metaphor, so some image in the mind that holds the new totality in it. Then the scientist maps out the new image in mathematics and empirical verification. But first the metaphor. First the Paddle-to-the-sea.
I must have stayed in contact with my inner child. Four was a big year for me. I have a memory of the fourth birthday and the cake. I got my book Paddle-to-the-sea, and my Teddy Bear. If you notice Teddy is wearing the hat Baba Muktananda gave me on my birthday when I left his ashram in India. Do you see the connection here? Metaphors connect you with the Transpersonal, with the Path of Totally. Without metaphor, the neuron circuits of the brain are closed, and the tape loop back upon itself, creating angry because the energy is feeding back upon itself. We are transcendent beings, open minds, and when the circuit is closed, our little train just goes in a circle.
Anger comes from the double-bind where the brain is closed in upon itself. You as awareness cannot break out, cannot cut attachment to concrete form, cannot expand, and cannot find the Path of Totality. The. double-bind is a lose/lose circuit where nothing you can do breaks the closed circuit. Ground Hog Day over and over. Our current government is caught in a double-bind where everything just feeds back upon itself. But we’re talking about your and me.
Anger is frustrated energy that wants to be free and creative, to flow with the energy of the totality, with the current of life. When the river loops back upon itself it is no longer going to the sea. Unless a creative Seeing occurs, a seeing of the Totality in the current movement, the tape loop turns violent and just floods everything with anger.
