Eckhart Tolle’s quote to jump start our talk: “The Ego doesn’t know that the source of all energy is within you, so it seeks it outside. It is not the formless attention which is Presence that the ego seeks, but attention to some FORM, such as recognition, praise, admiration, or just to be noticed in someway, to have its existence acknowledged.”
In the Ego’s eye the center of the world is itself as the subject that experiences the world (form). This is what we believe to be an individual, this “I” that experiences the world. So, quite naturally, if follows that “I” exist because “I” experience, the “I” need experience to affirm that “I” exist. “I” becomes a hunger for more experience, and since experience can’t be held, one becomes addicted to having new experiences, so one can have continued affirmation of existence. This is why we can’t stand “boring.”
The Ego confuses existence with excitement. It only feels alive when its excited by new experience. But what then is “formless attention” or Presence, that Tolle points to.
Presence cannot be experienced because it is not an object. The “I” as an image that experiences form rises with experience. I-IT is a closed system. “I” as image can’t have relationship, because in relationship two becomes ONE. In the I-IT (subject/object) the duality is locked. If the subject becomes one with its object, the “I” disappears or dies. I-IT is eternal exile from Unity or Presence.
al fact as each woman saw Cary Grant be transformed in their eye as a factual knight in “shining armor”…so you could actually see in the movie this mystical vision as form. Classic movies are very interesting because they take us back to where we have, as a materialistic secular society, some from. We can see our evolution and where we have not evolved in old movies.
What I noticed in this one—1947 was a new America that was born in the funeral pyre of WWII—was that the psychiatrist was the new “wise man.” He had the theories that described how the mind worked. He was the fixer.
The second thing I noticed was that the “bobby-soxer” was a new phenomena of a teen culture with its own language and dress, and subject to infatuations or the swooning over the Anima projection on the likes of Frank Sinatra who sang romanic mystical songs from the likes of Cole Porter….Night and Day, you are the ONE…
The I-IT consciousness was in the saddle now, and mystical love was popping out in our music and movies as metaphors. Instead of love for the transcendent ONE (God), romantic love was now the ideal and hope of the heart. We wanted the experience of love, romance, and living happy ever after, going off into the sunset, like our couple in the movie how left on a plane to live happily ever after as the One.
The seeds for the consumer society were being planted. I (as a separate sense of self or individual) was longing for the ONE, that would be obtainable as a product or romance…..The One would be replaced by some new exciting form that you could purchase. Our individuality is being based in having a new experience—since every experience becomes useless as an old experience. The great industrial machine that cranked out tanks would now crank out new forms (products) as experience, promoted through the alchemy of advertising. (MAD MEN).
Products became our “knight in shining armor.” When the new cars came out, the whole town went to see it. A new experience! Last year’s car was dead. The Knight is dead, long live the new Knight. The Transcendent ONE was being transubstantiated into form, as if God said: This new car is my body; this new bourbon is my blood. Eat and drink it and Remember Me.
Now this “knight in shining armor” has infected our politics. Trump infatuated many like a teen idol infatuates Bobby-soxers. He is the One…that untied me, the transcends my I-IT separation, the feeling that I’m an IT in exile. Trump restores my Lost Unity…..our screen idol.
But Trump was not the first. Remember JFK? A “shining knight” replace boring IKE. Something was happening to the collective mind of America. TV and movies and advertising were changing everything. The self as Image was now being sold as our true nature. Whenever One rose, it was immediately divided into two realities in conflict with each other, both competing to restore the One. Our world was becoming one of perpetual civil war of ITS fighting with ITS to restore the ONE source from which they both arose. Every One becomes. night and day.
