We’re going back to basics here and looking at the 400 year-old modern scientific age and why it seems to be crumbling now, just like the Holy Roman Catholic Church of the Middle Ages had its dome cracked by the Enlightenment. Every enlightenment eventually become Endarkment. It limitations are exposed and the Great Doubt comes in through the cracks.
The Objective World View of science became our common sense world that cannot be questioned for fear of insanity. In the Middle Ages if you doubted the church you went to hell and eternal damnation. Today if you question the Objective rational world view, you are accused of being insane. In fact, you don’t go into this Great Doubt because it is the Great Unknown. You will be entirely alone there…who can do that? Who is this Great Explorer who dares to go when no-one, your family, friends, and society, has dared to go? (View Talk)
When a World View comes to its end, it’s like our fish bowl breaking. We cannot image what will hold our reality together without our invisible fish bowl. A world view is always unconscious. We can see the world views of other cultures, or our own when it is far enough in the past, like the. 50s is today. But we can’t see the world view that holds us today, until the Great Doubt enters, and then it’s like Death is suddenly among us. We thought our world view would keep death out. But here it is. Death and Doubt are two faces of the same god.
What’s lacking in our quest for certainty in the modern age is an wider context of understanding. But western objective history does not come to the rescue because it is our objective view of reality that is being doubted. What was once certain in this Objective View is now uncertain. We are confronted with the Unknown, and that creates anxiety, uncertainty, doubt, and anger. We don’t know what we don’t know. The Dome of the Objective modern world view is cracking, and death seems to be coming in through the cracks instead of Light. Science fiction is willing to go there, but we can’t read the metaphors.
We need a new manual, but there is none….except Buddha Dharma. We believed in a world of matter, a world of things that function like a machine. All you have to do is figure out what the machine’s laws are and you can control it. But who is the controller? That guy isn’t on the map. We feel like the ghost in the machine.
The classic Zen Koan brings us to the points where our intellectual rational logical objective world view collapses. Everything you come up with to save you from Doubt is MU! (No). Where can I rest my head that is safe from Doubt?…..there is no place for the Son of Man to rest his head…no form that is not impermanent. No opinion, no belief can rescue from the great doubt or death…old age, sickness and death. There is no salvation…..Now what do you do? Do you stop existing? Or is there a sudden and unexpected shift from the Objective view where you live on. the periphery of life to the center that is YOU. God dwells in you as YOU. You are the lost center.
