The problem is not Jesus, for those who are frustrated with Christianity, but the body Jesus was buried in, the Church. Okay, we want to know God, be at one with God or Truth, and what does the Church say…”Well, since only Jesus can say “I and the Father are one”, you can’t know God yourself, you have to go through Jesus as the Way, and here on earth Jesus has a body, the Church is the Body of Christ; this body is your local church, and a church is a social institution that requires membership. You must believe in the doctrines of the church and not doubt them. The church is an ethical belief system, a creed , a code of visible behaviors and rituals. You have to look and think and speak like the members, or else you will be shammed and then, if you don’t repent, thrown out into the cold.
The problem is that God is not a social institution, not a set of moral beliefs and laws of social behavior. God is your own transcendent essence, your own ground of Being. The Church as a mediator puts itself between you and union with God and makes you dependent upon the Church or institution, like you are dependent upon a translator when speaking to someone of another language. We are taught not to trust our own understanding, our own interpretation of the language of God mystically hidden in scripture. Like Indiana Jones, you have to learn how to read the treasure map yourself.
The Church translates God for you. So no wonder you feel not quite complete, not quite fulfilled, that something is missing in your life, but the Church says if you complain, just try harder, pray harder, believe in the church harder. Your belief is weak. Something must be wrong with you not the Church if you can’t feel your birthright of being one with God.
The Church is the keeper of the symbols of transcendence, but it has used these symbols to keep you locked inside its doors. When you can read these symbols and metaphorical language for yourself, you find God everywhere, inside the church and outside, because you carry him as your own soul. The Church uses the language of the soul (transcendence) like advertising sells you soap by promising heaven. But the language is still there and available for you, but you can’t read it while locked inside the church. You have to make a leap of faith and step out side of the definitions placed upon you and God.
The path of transcendence is to reject the Church lockdown of the mind, while at the same time—this is important— not throwing the transcendent language in the trash when you leave. Then, you can come back to the church and it no longer has any walls. The Church and the mystical teachings of Christ becomes transparent to God your divine nature as God’s Son.
Sorry, it’s Sunday morning and I tend to get a little preachy. I’m an uncertified minister who left the fold many years ago and stands under a tree in the park by the church. For those who come out of the church and vomit in the bushes, you can learn how to read the treasure map of your soul like Indiana Jones. There is a real treasure to be found.
